Digital Recording

This approach to preserving sound every component of a sound down into digital (electronic) data. The sound, a car horn sounding for example, is assessed and analyzed thousands of times a second. This is called sampling. These samples are stored in various means on digital media (hard drives, CDs, etc.). Sophisticated software can be used to turn this stream of digital data into sound that can be recorded onto analog (“old fashioned”) recordings.

Use of digital approach to production and distribution of reading material for the Library of Congress is under development. To date no standards or approaches have been deemed so effective that they have been implemented.
